All Heart

This is definitely outside of the box for me. I started with painting brownish red fish eggs. Not sure what I was thinking or after. Just found myself drawing them. Decided to play with filters and after applying several in jest and fun, one particular filter turned my brown fish eggs into textured blue discs and spirals. From there, koi fish kept screaming in my head. Though I initially thought of painting three chasing each other, I somehow stopped at two and moved them into Yin Yang shape–kissing with their tails intertwined.

Women Friendships Are Special

Autumn’s Friendship

There’s something very special about women friendships.  Our friends know us better than anyone–they tell us the truth, encourage and support us and even help us pick up the pieces when things are falling apart. Women enjoy the bonds that bring us together and everything that comes with that–laughing, crying, teasing, playing, singing, dancing, great conversation and more.

One of my paintings displayed at galleries and art festivals has always been appreciated by women in particular. Autumn’s Friendship. Women will walk by it. Stop. Study it. Comment on how it reminds them of friendship and that they love the colors.  They smile, tell me personal stories of their women friends.  They inspire and uplift me as I listen. A large number of them by a print usually to give to a friend.

My sister (she’s also one of my best friends) came up with a lovely idea — that I should offer an “Autumn’s Friendship” drinking mug in honor of all the inspiration women share with each other. So, we did it! We found a manufacturer to do it. For each mug sold, 20% is donated to WomenArts, an organization that supports women in the arts.

Architecture and cityscapes are new for me to paint. I’ve avoided doing them in fear that I didn’t have it in me since my natural inclination is primarily nature and figurative. It’s taken me several months to finish this one … was stuck on trying to make it more realistic and at daylight. Even in art, the artist must let go and allow the piece to speak. I’m glad I listened.

In the Still of Night

Last year, my father was in the hospital from Thanksgiving to New Year before passing away in early January. The hospital was an hour from home, which made it feel like it took forever to get there. All the snow and ice of the season made the drive through all the country roads even longer. Winter scenes  of stark icy trees, dark skies and mysterious shadows were my daily road companions. My mind was mesmerized by the sheer beauty of open land blanketed in white and glass rubbing against one another while casting deep shadows. This holiday season with cold days already chilling the bones, I have returned to the icy stillness — to the still of the night.

This painting was inspired by a good friend, Marilyn, who dreamed I would name a painting “In the Still of Night”. Thanks Marilyn for your dream
