Last year, my father was in the hospital from Thanksgiving to New Year before passing away in early January. The hospital was an hour from home, which made it feel like it took forever to get there. All the snow and ice of the season made the drive through all the country roads even longer. Winter scenes  of stark icy trees, dark skies and mysterious shadows were my daily road companions. My mind was mesmerized by the sheer beauty of open land blanketed in white and glass rubbing against one another while casting deep shadows. This holiday season with cold days already chilling the bones, I have returned to the icy stillness — to the still of the night.

This painting was inspired by a good friend, Marilyn, who dreamed I would name a painting “In the Still of Night”. Thanks Marilyn for your dream

Working on a new collection “Mystical Lights”, I find myself going deeper into the mystical and more mysterious side of my being. First, I painted the desert in deep, rich hues. Afterward, I noticed the tree branches appeared to be holding something that wasn’t there. Quietly, my heart could hear the song–could feel the romance of the desert at dusk. So, I added the something–the classical guitar strumming the romantic sounds of a solo heartbeat.

Though I don’t exhibit my “sea” paintings, I love painting them. 90% of my time painting is digital. The other 10% is spent painting on canvas using heavy body acrylics. When I do paint on canvas, I find myself drawn to painting the sea. There’s a different connection for me with a brush in my hand versus a stylus pen used in digital painting. The lightness of a brush, its texture, the smell of the paint, the organic flow that puts me in the deepest part of my emotional being where I connect profoundly with the sea.

I love blending lots of colors digitally…layering and shaping color into beautiful landscapes while adding texture and creating shadows. It takes a lot of time and patience to paint traditional subjects using digital tools. To give my work the depth and beauty that I strive for, each color I paint with becomes a single layer. I can have as many as 100+ layers that I merge when the painting tells me it is finished.
